OMGPOP, I’m in like with you.

A couple Fridays ago was my last day at Razorfish. I’ve already moved along to my new role as the Product Manager at OMGPOP, a NYC-based social gaming startup, and it’s been quite a busy yet exciting time so far. Now that I’m more settled in, I thought I’d reflect a bit.

Working at Razorfish was a great experience, and my departure is bittersweet. I got to work alongside some of the brightest and most creative minds I’ve ever met. Razorfish is undoubtedly at the forefront of the exciting and increasingly growing industry of online advertising. As part of the Technology team there, I had the opportunity to work with both back-end and front-end technologies for some pretty big brands — Ford, Mercedes Benz, and NFL, to name a few. In addition, I also had the chance to design and implement strategic solutions in the areas of Analytics and Social Media. It has been both a great learning experience, and one that I’m proud of.

After helping to create engaging online user experiences and being exposed to various aspects of this business, I’ve always felt the itch to switch perspectives from the consulting-side to the client-side. When you are the “client,” you are ultimately responsible for the vision and strategy behind the project. In fact, the project becomes your own product, your own creation. And in this mindset comes the passion and near-obsession to make each and every little detail of your product to be near-perfect. From the initial brainstorming and design phases in the beginning to the analytics research and constant optimization post-launch, you are one with the product every step of the way.

Not to say we didn’t provide the same quality of effort to our client work, but it’s simply a different look at things. When I look at a product from that perspective, I feel like I’m on another level. And this is what excites me most about product management and development. It’s especially true in a startup environment and in being surrounded by other similarly ambitious, self-motivated entrepreneurs.

So far, my experience at OMGPOP has been challenging, exciting, and fast-paced as I absorb as much information and domain knowledge as I possibly could. I’m working with a great team, and look forward to this new and exciting opportunity!

My SXSW’i 2010 Experience

So SXSW Interactive 2010 has come and gone; it was another great year for the conference and another worthwhile trip to Austin, TX. Sure, some of the panels and events were a hit-and-miss; and sure, there’s almost too many things overlapping at the same time that it’s inevitable to regret missing this-and-that or feeling like your experience could have been even more fulfilling. But all-in-all, it was a great learning experience and I enjoyed meeting some of the most interesting and influential folks in the industry – all only within 1 week.

As in previous years, Razorfish made another strong showing with 42 delegates, 12 of which spoke on 9 panels that drew large crowds. Our Opening Night Happy Hour — where our Emerging Experiences team showcased an Augmented Reality Photo app — was a great success (the line to get in was around the block!). Moreover, we used QR Codes on postcards, temporary tattoos, pins, and t-shirts to distribute the “Razorfish 5” Technology report and to help raise money for charity: water.

In addition to being a brand ambassador for Razorfish, I also served as an official SXSW Interactive Panel Liaison this year. In this position, I had the great opportunity in meeting and working with some of SXSW’s esteemed panelists to make sure the logistics of each presentation went smoothly. Some of these panel presentations included:

Here are some of my takeaways from this year’s SXSW:

What an April Fool

I’m not usually big on April Fools, but what happened yesterday was pretty funny (or stupid).

Last night, shortly before April 1 ends, I was on my way to the movies to finally catch Avatar in 3D. Yes, I never saw it before. Thus, you can understand my excitement in being able to see the very last showing in 3D ever.

In order to ensure that I’d be guaranteed a seat, I planned on buying tickets on Fandango several days in advance. But since there was a Visa promo on Fandango, my friend purchased the tickets instead since I don’t have a single Visa card on me.

In short, here’s how the experience went:

- showed up at the theatres 45 min early

- there was a LONG line outside the theater. fortunately the theater was big enough.. with 3 levels of seating.. so we ended up getting decent seats. the whole place was packed and it was basically a sold out show.

- after the frenzy in finding seats, my friends and I were highly excited as we were sitting there waiting for the show to start.. and even brought some tasty array of snacks, candy, and beer to make the experience more enjoyable.

- after the previews finished, the movie started playing.. which is when I started to get suspicious…

I thought to myself: Where are the blue people, and why are they talking about Gods?

My friend thought: This is a really long preview..

I suddenly recalled seeing a “Clash 3D” label above the theater door, but originally dismissed it thinking it was the previous movie.

Crap! This is not Avatar. This is Clash of the Titans! …

(checked phone to see movie times at the theater)

Last showing of Avatar was 3pm earlier that day. I check my ticket stub.. it says “Avatar 3D” !! wtf?? I check the date. Wed 3/31. OMG !! =(

So long story short.. I didn’t end up getting to watch Avatar as planned. Fortunately, our ticket was still accepted (the guy didn’t notice?) and we got to see Clash… but I didn’t think it was that good of a movie.

creative projects are sometimes like playing tennis. you can practice alone but it’s much easier and more productive to have someone else to bounce balls back and forth with.

my not so clever and semi-burnt out but not burnt out enough because i’m still on a roll at 3 am words of (non) wisdom.

(how’s that for wordy?!)

GigaOm just posted about the $350,000 angel round we just raised. Here’s the inside story how we raised the money.

Back in January, we raised about $150,000 from friends & family - my mentor from DreamIt Ventures, my old Amazon VP, my parents, a friend from college, a bizdev guy I met at

Awesome. Love it. Congrats!
