SXSW Music: The Death of Vinyl
The SXSW 2010 Panel Picker is officially open, and I’m glad to announce that I’ve submitted a couple ideas, one for Music and another for Interactive. On Music first.. my proposal is titled “The Death of Vinyl: The Digital DJ Revolution”. Basically it takes a look at the trend that the DJ scene has taken from traditional vinyl to more digital mediums, such as CD’s and digital vinyl.
Specifically, one of the topics up for discussion is Rane Corporation’s Serato Scratch Live. Scratch Live allows manipulation and playback of digital audio files using traditional vinyl turntables or CD players via special timecode vinyl records or CD’s. It seeks to cross the divide between the versatility of digital audio and the tactile control of vinyl turntablism. This panel explores the positive and negative impacts that technology has had on DJ culture, business, and music production.
